Daily 5/CAFE
Daily 5 refers to how we structure our literacy block this year. This structure provides time for both whole group lessons and time for every student to be engaged in meaningful literacy tasks while I work with small guided reading groups &/or conference with individual students. Daily 5 is named for the literacy tasks students will work on independently while I work with small groups. They are:
CAFE provides a structure for organizing the reading strategies students will learn to use this year. The strategies we will learn fit into four categories, which are:
Reading
Every student will participate in whole group language arts instruction as well as a small guided reading group. In guided reading groups, students will read books appropriate for their reading level. I will listen to students read regularly throughout the year to determine students' reading levels & groups and to make decisions about the focus of our guided reading lessons.
Writing
We will write every day in first grade! Students will learn to write narrative, persuasive, and informational texts this year. We will work on capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and structure. We will use shared writing, teacher modeling, and plenty of practice time to accomplish this goal.
Spelling
We will be using Words Their Way for our spelling curriculum this year. This program allows children to work at their own level to develop their knowledge of sound and spelling patterns. While I will check their progress periodically, there are not formal spelling tests as part of this program. Children will have the opportunity to practice their words & spelling patterns during Word Work time at school.
